Face to Face Interview Tips
- Ensure you know where you are going, how to get there and leave in plenty of time
- Vector Resourcing will have supplied a copy of your CV, along with any relevant information, however re-read your CV and details of the project to be worked on, technical environment and proposed role prior to the interview
- Ask your recruitment consultant for any tips that the company may respond well to
- Leave nothing to chance, take Vector’s contact details with you as well as those for the person and company you are visiting
- Look smart and presentable. If in doubt err on the side of caution and wear a business suit and don’t forget to polish your shoes
- If you smoke, avoid cigarettes for at least an hour prior to your appointment, and make sure your hands are clean and breath is fresh
- Avoid smelling of alcohol and do not attend an interview after drinking
- If possible remove any body piercings and cover up tattoos
- Relax, communication is essential so go along with the initial small talk it will help break the ice in those opening minutes
- Consider your body language, don’t be defensive and cross your arms; be assertive, sit up straight and look interested
- Listen carefully, drawing on your skills which best suit the role and if necessary control the situation to highlight good experience you feel is relevant
- Be prepared to discuss your technical ability in detail and expand on the content of your CV
- Technical tests are becoming increasingly popular so check before hand if this is likely and don’t be too surprised if you are asked to take one
- Remember this is also an opportunity for you to clarify exactly what the role entails and whether it’s for you. Note the company culture to see if your personality fits in as this leads to the most successful placements
- First impressions count, those first five minutes are crucial – be positive, attentive and polite. Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact and SMILE
- Never lie – most people can tell
- Identify key people if there’s a panel. The chairperson will make the introductions and is easily identified but make sure you know who you will be working directly to and make plenty of eye contact with them in particular
COSTLY MISTAKES
- • Being unprepared
- • Arriving late
- • Poor or limp handshake
- • Appearing scruffy
- • Not communicating effectively or clearly
- • Talking unfavourably about previous contracts / employers
- • Being aggressive or acting superior
- • Making excuses for failings
- • At the end of the interview, don’t ask if you have got the job or for any feedback, we will liaise with the company on your behalf and never discuss money, leave all the negotiations to us
