Advantages of a permanent IT position

Monday 14 September 2009

I’ve just joined Vector’s Permanent Division and my first week has been very interesting, giving me new insight into the IT recruitment industry. I am amazed at how busy and pro-active all the consultants are as they seek to fulfil their client requirements, ensuring they find the best candidate for each role. What really surprised me was that Vector actually helps out with the whole interview process, providing valuable advice every step of the way to both clients and contractors. It is already clear to me, that Vector is highly professional, and with phone calls the preferred method of contact, there is that additional personal touch.

Being new to permanent recruitment, I wanted to find out what the advantages of a permanent position are, so following some research and guidance from Allan Callus, Head of Permanent Recruitment here at Vector, this is what I have discovered;

A permanent job offers an individual the luxuries of job security and stability. Having security in your work can improve and enhance your performance with many companies offering training and development in your field. Choosing a permanent position also means you will be more settled, contractors work in many different locations depending on where the work is at the time and moving from one company to another would also mean integrating with many different environments and types of people.

As a permanent member of staff, you will also be entitled to employment benefits and bonuses such as health insurance, sick pay, annual pay reviews and holiday entitlement. Permanent employees are also entitled to any retirement plans sponsored by the company. Also, all your tax and NI contributions should be automatically deducted from your pay, saving you the time and hassle of dealing with your own accounts.

What you are entitled to will very much depend on individual company policies, however one clear distinction is that contractors do not receive the same rights as permanent workers in any organisation. Ultimately the decision will depend on what suits your skills, lifestyle, circumstances, personality and individual preferences.
