Pre-Budget Report Signals Great Future for IT Contractors in 2010

Thursday 10 December 2009

“The future looks great for contract IT consultants in 2010,” says Martin Pite, Team Manager at Vector Resourcing. “Following Alistair Darling’s announcement, the Government seem to be further backing technology as a route to economic recovery which, when coupled with anticipated tax rises in today’s pre-Budget report, means that more and more skilled workers will look to contracting as a way to increase their net income."

Here at Vector, we have seen a stabilisation this year in the balance between available contractors and the number of positions vacant. With a workforce now migrating away from permanent employment in highly skilled areas, there is pressure on our clients to rely on us to deliver the right person for their most pressing or complex projects. Further, with likely tax rises impacting on payroll budgets, employers could see contractors as a sustainable alternative where they can also save their NI contributions.

Companies will strive harder than ever to stay at the forefront of their industry sectors, giving rise to an ever increasing number of time critical projects. The natural fit for delivery on time without the incumbence of employment further encourages greater contractor use.

Those running professional service companies will find themselves in higher demand, and the importance of reputation and quantifiable delivery experience will be top of every recruiter’s list.
